Highly Ranked Lawrenceville Prevails Over Spirited Tigers

Nervously checking my cell phone for text updates on the Tigers’ annual contest versus Lawrenceville, I could not believe what I saw every time my phone beeped.  ”1 nothing princeton!”, “2-1 phs”, “3-1 phs”.  And so the first quarter ended in what had to be the best period of lacrosse the PHS varsity has put together so far this year.  Reports from the field confirmed the Tiger defense was on fire and the offense was clicking as well.  Lawrenceville always produces tough lacrosse teams as evidenced by its decade-long dominance of the Prep A tournament, but this year’s Big Red team is something special.  Coming into the game against PHS, Lawrenceville was 6-0 having beaten 3 of its opponents by 10 goals or more and having manhandled Washington State powerhouse Issaquah 7-3 just 2 days earlier.  The Big Red are currently ranked third in the state and if they beat Malvern Prep and/or Brunswick School later in their schedule will rocket up the national rankings.  So it is a tremendous credit to our Tigers that they outplayed such a strong team even if it ended up being only for the opening period.  But despite Lawrenceville’s connect the dots attack that produced 11 straight scores, the Tigers never gave up and managed to outscore the Big Red yet again in the fourth quarter by 5 goals to 4.  So the scoreboard said 16-8 Lawrenceville at the end of the contest, but the box score says 2 quarters PHS, 2 quarters Big Red, testament to the Tigers’ never say die spirit.  Griffin Peck was outstanding in the net with 11 saves and Mike Hellstern and Kirby Peck scored two goals each.  For the Trenton Times/Star-Ledger recap click here.

Notre Dame Gains 3rd Straight Win Over PHS, 7-2

Until last year Notre Dame had never beaten PHS in boys lacrosse.  But yesterday the Irish made it 3 straight victories over the varsity Tigers and remained undefeated (3-0) with a 7-2 triumph on the brand new Notre Dame turf field.  Despite a commendable relief effort in goal by Elliot Wilson who stopped numerous short range Irish shots, another aggressive effort by the defensive unit, and a devil-may-care gutsy performance from Kirby Peck who drew 4 personal foul penalties against Notre Dame, the Princeton offense could not get goals from their set offense.  Peck also notched one of the Tigers’ 2 goals when he recovered a checked ball from his knees and then evaded 3 Irish defenders to fire it past Notre Dame’s outstanding goalie, Ryan Anglim.  Peck’s 7 goals on the season account for half the team’s total. Will Kister tried to get PHS back in the game with a fourth quarter rip from outside. Click Here for the Trenton Times recap.

Tigers Nipped by Bulldogs

Despite a second consecutive hat trick by PHS midfielder Kirby Peck, and a pretty assist by Robby Dowers, the Tigers fell short against an improved and matured Hopewell Valley Bulldog team, losing 6-7.  Click here for Trenton Times recap.  The Tigers’ JV team also came out on the short end of their contest vs. Hopewell falling 4-8.  No worries we get a second shot at the Bulldogs on April 28th.

JV Laxers Kick Off Harford Era with Win Over WWPN

The PHS Junior Varsity won its first game under new coach Chris Harford, defeating the West Windsor Plainsboro North Knights 4-2.  Having Varsity back-up Elliot Wilson in goal shut down the Knights offense while Dylan Johnston notched two goals for the Tigers and Gabe McGregor tallied two assists.
