PHS (Class of ’03), Providence lax great, and last week’s Face-Off Dinner Keynote speaker Bennett Murphy, assembled a veritable “Who’s Who” of local lax talent to take the field at the Sanderson 6-on-6 Tournament last August. The squad included PHS lax legends Murphy, Casey Rahn (PHS Class of ’07, UMass), Taylor Vickers Annis (PHS Class of ’06, Rutgers), Joey Gwin (PHS Class of ’00, box lax with Native Americans), and Sam Finnell (PHS Class of ’06, Deerfield/Bucknell) as well as current PHS lax players Will Hare (freshman) and Matt Olentine (sophomore). This stacked team cruised through the preliminary rounds with Finnell playing incredibly in goal and made it to the finals where they suffered a 1-goal loss to a team that included 3-time All World Goalie and tournament host Chris Sanderson as well as his brother Ryan who also played pro lacrosse in the NLL. The PHS heavy team probably would have triumphed but for some “Canadian” rules interpretations, the most important of which is when Canadians host a lacrosse tournament their team must win it. It was a great evening with the current PHS players producing their own highlights in an effort to keep up with the older lacrosse titans. These included Hare coming within a hair of scoring in the opening contest and Olentine stripping both his brother Mike (PHS ’10) and #1-ranked Syracuse’s Joe Moore (who was a star at WWPN and graced our TV sets on Sunday as Syracuse trounced Duke at the Meadowlands).
